A Little HISTORY Of BERKELEY SQUARE
Tucked into the heart of Mayfair, Berkeley Square has long been one of London’s most distinguished addresses. Laid out in the mid-18th century, the square was part of the expansion of Mayfair from open countryside into one of the city’s grandest neighbourhoods. It was named after the Berkeley family, who once owned the land, and its elegant Georgian layout quickly attracted the wealthy elite of the time.
By the late 1700s, Berkeley Square had become a magnet for high society. Some of London’s most influential families called it home, and the buildings reflected the power and status of their occupants. The architecture around the square still includes fine examples of Georgian townhouses, some of which have been carefully preserved or converted into high-end offices and galleries.
One of the square’s more famous claims to fame is No. 50, often called the most haunted house in London, a Victorian tale that still captures imaginations today. Over the years, Berkeley Square has drawn a fascinating mix of residents, from prime ministers to poets, and even a young Winston Churchill lived nearby for a time.
The square itself, with its mature London plane trees (some over 200 years old), remains a green pocket in the city. It’s a quiet retreat from the bustle of nearby Bond Street and Piccadilly, and the surrounding area is still known for luxury, with fine antiques dealers, art galleries, and exclusive clubs all just steps away.
Today, Berkeley Square is a blend of the past and present. While the atmosphere is steeped in history, it continues to be a sought-after location for business, diplomacy, and luxury living. Its history is never far from sight written into the buildings, the trees, and the stories that have unfolded there for more than two centuries.
