Spring Time
April is here, and so are the flowers; daffodils have beautifully overrun us, and they are popping up everywhere you look. Much like we joked in our last newsletter, we have also had sun, snow and just about everything in between through March, which these days is not uncommon. At Jacksons Antique we have been buying at a rate of knots and have managed to procure some beautiful items across our collection.
We wanted to spotlight two of our latest additions this week. Firstly, a very unusual piece of 19th-century Folk Art was carved into the shape of a witch, often referred to as a witch’s Scrying Mirror. Documented in the Museum of Witchcraft the mirror in the words of influential English Neopagan Warlock Cecil Williamson: ‘There are witch mirrors, and there are witch mirrors, but of all the mirrors used by witches, this one is the top. When you use these mirrors, you gaze into them, and then suddenly, you will see in the mirror someone standing behind you. Whatever you do, do not turn around. Remember that, never never turn around. What happens next? Good gracious, you talk quietly to the figure or face in the mirror, close your eyes if you cannot bear it, but never, ever turn around.’ A similar mirror was recorded by Sotheby’s Auctions as having been made by T Pooley in Belfast in mid 19C.
The second object we wanted to highlight is the fascinating oversized pair of open barley twist-carved Georgian candlesticks. They really are quite fun and such a fantastic size measuring 61cm Tall (24 inches), they are comprised of a rounded base with stepped foot and large openwork barley twist style stems, they are also complete with original metalwork scones and are in beautiful condition with a superb patination throughout. Amazingly, the candlesticks have survived 200 years without getting broken or damaged and are, therefore, in very good condition.
Both objects are now available to purchase online, and as always, we offer free WORLDWIDE delivery. Our other procurements include a large Art Deco Amphora porcelain Elephant and Lioness figure, which is a huge piece of decorative porcelain measuring 66.5cm High (26.2 Inches). We also have a Japanese Meiji-period Tortoise okimono with a mounted crystal ball on its back by Matsuyama. It comes with its original signed Tomobako (wooden box). Finally, we have a large Italian Murano blue glass floral vase/Jardiniere with alternating decorative panels perfect for a centrepiece to display flowers. Please check out the website, as we have a host of new objects listed. The easiest way to see all our latest stock is to click on the Show Me Everything category.
