Exceptional Japanese Satsuma Vase Painted by Okamoto Ryozan for the Yasuda Company

Welcome Friends

February 24′

Dear friends,

We are one month into the new year and one fair checked off the list for 2024. I took the opportunity of a last minute stand at the Pavilions of Harrogate Antique Fair which was our first time exhibiting in the north of the country and our first fair with Cooper Antique Fairs. I am pleased to say that the fair went very well and we are hoping to get a place at the next exhibition nearer the summer months. I would like to add my personal thanks to everyone who made purchases from us and thank you to everyone for making us feel very welcome. I couldn’t help but capture a couple of images from the show ground side of the pavilion on set up day in the fresh crisp Yorkshire air and sunshine. I also grabbed a photo looking out the hotel at the beautiful traditional town of Harrogate during sunrise.

Featured this month we have a stunning selection of Japanese Satsuma which we are pleased to bring to the market from a range of artists. It has been very difficult to choose a favourite but we have selected a couple to highlight in the newsletter. Firstly we have this superb example by Okamoto Ryozan for the Yasuda Company. The detail is absolutely exceptional having multiple layers of banded decoration with a beautifully potted and slightly tapered body.

Secondly we have chosen to featured a fine example from the Kinkozan workshops. The vase potted in a globular shape with four intricately painted panels including a geisha and her child, a floral scene with a Red Headed Japanese Wood Pigeon and a white dove and a bustling village scene with traditional Japanese buildings. The final scene contains a polychrome Japanese maple branch with three brightly coloured swallows.

Finally we have selected this beautifully patinated French bronze figure depicting Amalthea and Jupiter’s Goat after the original by Pierre Julien in the 18th century. The bronze is finished with an ormolu piping to the base with a central scene depicting a scantly clad Nymph bearing the reigns of Jupiter’s goat. The Bronze is signed by the renowned French foundry Barbedienne with the stamp of A. Collas. The bronze was available originally in five sizes from the Barbedienne catalogue, 34cm for 200 Francs, 43cm for 250 Francs, 52cm for 350 Francs, 69cm for 600 Francs and the largest size 86cm for 1050 Francs. We have added the 52cm model to our collection and it is available to purchase online now.
