Japanese Meiji Period Iron Charger by Seibei Komai 駒井清兵衛
Welcome Friends
October 22′
As summer has flown by and we are just in the infinite stage of Autumn, the leaves are starting to turn and so is the weather! I have absolutely given in and have laid down arms to my better half who is adamant we now need to turn the heating on. We have enjoyed a couple of cosy nights in while the rain has poured outside, and the seasonal tussle now begins with the temperature of the thermostat which I am trying not to concede in also!
In the last month we were fortunate enough to be invited to the Goodwood Revival festival which I must admit was absolutely fantastic, it involved a bit of market research as much as the day was for pleasure. We enjoyed a day in the sunshine as if we were back in the 1940s and 50’s. Anyone with a slight interest in that era, or vintage cars I would highly recommend a visit. We met with good colleagues and friends over at Mark Goodger antiques who specialise in antique boxes & accessories during the day. Please do head over to Marks page, he has a great collection and is extremely knowledgeable in his field. Please let him know you were given the heads up by Jacksons Antique if you pay him a visit.
Between the very high value cars, trucks and various other machinery I found nestled in the centre the biggest collection I’ve ever seen of the Austin J40 pedal car. It comes close to my heart as several years ago I restored one for a 40th birthday present to my uncle. The car itself had been in the family over 30 years and I managed to pull it out from my late Nans garage and give it the love it needed. It had a total nut and bolt restoration and I gave it as a surprise present to my Uncle.

Alongside our trip to Goodwood Revival I have been searching far and wide for some beautiful objects to add to the collection ready for the season of fairs that are coming up. I have kept a few back that will be exclusively available at the upcoming fairs however I have released a few that I will be bringing along to the Cotswold Art & Antique Dealers Association at Compton Verny.
I am delighted to offer a Japanese Iron charger by the renowned metal working family Komai. The dish itself is by Seibei Komai the son of Otojiro Komai who’s father was the original founder of this form of damascene in 1853 pre Meiji restoration. The charger bears the scene of the Itsukushima Shrine also known as the Great Torii of Miyajima. The Shinto Shrine of Miyajima is best known for its floating Torii gate which is the central scene of the charger. As well as being a UNESCO world heritage site it is also amongst one of the top tourist locations in Japan today. For further information please click here for the the catalogued piece.
Also added to the collection is a stunning French Napoleon III style Jardiniere centre piece featuring a thick crystal cut liner with ormolu flower mounts and biscuit porcelain panels which are most likely by Sevres. The centre piece dates circa 1880 and is of stunning quality throughout. For further information on the piece please click here.
