Beddoes & Co

(1826-early 20th c.)

Beddoes & Co was an established Birmingham silversmith firm, founded in the early 19th century and active well into the 20th century. Known for its refined silverware and decorative objects, the company produced a wide range of pieces that reflected both everyday function and elegant design. Their work is identifiable by the Birmingham Assay Office hallmark alongside the maker’s mark “B & Co”, a detail collectors still look for today.

The firm gained particular recognition during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, creating sterling silver cigarette cases, dressing table sets, vanity jars, compacts, and tableware that brought both luxury and practicality into the home. By the 1920s and 1930s, Beddoes & Co embraced the fashionable Art Deco style, producing pieces with clean lines, enamel accents, and a strong sense of modernity. Some designs were also linked with Synyer & Beddoes, a respected partnership of the same era, highlighting their collaborative role within Birmingham’s thriving silversmithing trade first registered in.

Today, Beddoes & Co silver remains highly collectible, valued for its design, quality, and place within Britain’s rich silversmithing tradition. From Edwardian brush sets to Jazz Age compacts, their pieces continue to embody innovation of English silver.
