Bohuslav Bedřich Josef Schnirch
(1845–1901)
Bohuslav Bedřich Josef Schnirch was one of the most important Czech sculptors of the 19th century, remembered for his monumental public works and architectural sculpture across Prague. Born in 1845 into a family of engineers and builders, Schnirch first trained in civil engineering and architecture before turning to sculpture. He studied under Josef Zítek in Prague, Franz Bauer and Franz Melnitzky in Vienna, and later worked in Munich and Italy, where the influence of Renaissance masters left a lasting mark on his style.

Schnirch’s early breakthrough came with the decoration of the National Theatre in Prague, where he created the figures of Apollo and the Nine Muses, along with bronze groups for the theatre’s exterior. He went on to produce major works for the Rudolfinum and the National Museum, where his allegorical sculptures Dedication, Enthusiasm, Love for the Truth and Love for the Past crown the building’s dome.
His best-known commission is the equestrian monument to George of Poděbrady (1891), a twice life-size copper figure that remains one of Prague’s most iconic monuments. Later works included public commissions for Old Town Square, where his dramatic figure of a firefighter rescuing a victim became his final completed project.

Throughout his career, Schnirch was deeply engaged in Czech cultural life, serving in artistic associations and collaborating with leading architects of his time. His sculpture combined Renaissance-inspired naturalism with strong national symbolism, helping to define the visual identity of Prague in the late 19th century.
Bohuslav Schnirch died in 1901 at the age of 56, but his work endures in the landmarks of Prague, where his vision continues to shape the city’s historic skyline.
