Master of Neoclassical Bronze Sculpture in Belle Époque France

Ernest Rancoulet (1870 to 1915) was a French sculptor born in Bordeaux who gained recognition during the Belle Époque for his refined bronze sculptures. He became known for his allegorical, mythological and figurative works that combined classical styling with the elegance of Art Nouveau.
Rancoulet’s sculptures often depicted mythological heroes, society women and athletes, all rendered with a realism and grace that captured the spirit of the late 19th century. One of his most celebrated works is Hercules, Athena and Cerberus, illustrating the twelfth labor of Hercules as he seizes the three headed dog of the underworld.

Exhibiting regularly at the Paris Salon, Rancoulet established a reputation for both technical mastery and creativity. He frequently produced limited edition bronzes and was particularly noted for creating pairs of figures designed to complement one another. These included dancers, heralds, gardeners and Victorian women, often presented from different perspectives to enrich the display.
His works were often inscribed with mythical verse, including references to Ovid’s Metamorphoses, further highlighting his classical inspiration. Rancoulet’s bronzes are admired for their intricate detailing, the careful delineation of motion and the subtle integration of Art Nouveau elements. Today they remain highly sought after by collectors and institutions for their compositions and quality.

Rancoulet’s career was prolific though relatively short, ending with his death in 1915. His legacy lives on in his classical bronze figures which continue to stand as some of the finest examples of French sculpture from the Belle Époque.
