Etling Paris (Edmond Laurent Etling)

Edmond Laurent Etling (1878-1940)

was born in Paris at 11, rue des Halles (1st district), to Cerf Etling and Valerie Dreyfus. He gained renown as a French art dealer, gallery owner, designer, and manufacturer of high-quality Art Deco decorative objects crafted from bronze, ceramics, and art glass.

Etling founded La Societe Anonyme Edmond Etling (Edmond Etling Limited Company) in 1909, which produced decorative items and collaborated with sculptors and artists such as Georges Béal, Demétre Chiparus, Claire Colinet, Armand Godard, and others. His foundry, Edmond Etling & Cie, often referred to as “Etling Glass,” became well-known for its distinctive pieces. Etling also owned Galerie Béranger, located in Paris. Etling is particularly noted for his light blue opalescent glass objects, including plates and bowls, which were also made in gray and frosted glass. These pieces typically bore the cast signature “Etling France,” followed by a model number corresponding to the Choisy-le-Roi catalogue. In 1910, Etling received the diplome d’honneur at the Brussels International Exhibition, and in 1923, he was awarded the Grand Prix in Paris. Due to World War II, Etling’s shop was closed in 1940 and as a person of Jewish descent, he was tragically sent to a Nazi concentration camp, where he passed away.

In the 1970s, the Manufacture Royale de Porcelaine de Sèvres revived some of Etling’s designs, particularly focusing on his iconic female nudes.
