Antique Japanese Ceramics

Antique Japanese Ceramics, much like their close relatives in China, have been around for centuries. Japanese ceramics include distinct styles from various regions, such as Raku, Imari, Arita, and Satsuma ware, each known for their unique glazing techniques and artistic expressions.

Japanese ceramics emphasise natural aesthetics, and since the 4th century AD, Japanese ceramics have often been influenced by neighbouring East Asian civilizations, such as Chinese and Korean-style pottery. Tea ceremony ceramics, particularly tea bowls, play a central role in Japanese ceramic history, with hand-crafted Raku pieces being especially revered. Decorative porcelain from the Edo and Meiji periods, like the well-collected Satsuma ware, also gained international popularity.

Antique Japanese ceramics are often valued for their refined simplicity and artistry, which usually depict Japanese culture, legends, myths and religion.

At Jacksons Antique, we have a particular interest in Japanese Antiques. In our Antique Japanese Ceramics collection, we aim to offer a beautiful selection, generally focusing on the Edo Period (1603-1868) and the Meiji Period (1868-1912), including pieces such as Satsuma pottery wares and Kutani wares.
