Antique Carriage Clocks

Antique carriage clocks are portable timepieces that were designed for travellers at the beginning of the 18th century following the invention of the spring-driven clock.

These timepieces were compact and usually enclosed in sturdy leather cases for protection during travel. Often made of brass, they feature a handle on top for easy transport and sometimes a repeater button for telling the time in the dark or while still cased.

Carriage clocks became known for their precise craftsmanship and uniform design. They typically operated on mechanical movements and often had glass panels that allowed a view of the inner workings.

As Antique Carriage Clocks developed, many began to feature intricate details like hand-engraved designs, enamel dials and panels and unusual mechanical movements, which are now highly prized by collectors.

Our Antique Carriage Clock collection at Jacksons Antique boasts a selection of Carriage Clocks mainly dating to 19th century Europe with mixed media and mechanics. We look to curate a selection of more unusual carriage clocks with more uncommon movements, dials, and manufacturers, such as minute repeaters, triple dials, alarms, and centre sweepers, to name a few.
