    From our collectables catagory, we are pleased to offer this Antique Coconut sailor bug bear. The sailors bug bear dating to the late 18th century carved in relief with a central crest with classical objects and two birds flying with floral borders. To opening with a mythical bearded figure. The powder flask bug bear dating to the late 18th century circa 1790.


    Bug Bear (powder flask), a coconut carved by sailors and/or soldiers who visited the East or West Indies in the late 18th to the early 19th centuries. The bug bears were carved from green coconut shells which were easier to carve than dried ones. There are various examples of these types of items from a host of European countries during their visits. Originally the bug bears would have had a form of stopper on a chain which would protect the contents within, usually gunpowder.

    Condition Good, one hairline throughout the lower third of the coconut below the hunters feet.
