Bug Bear (powder flask), a coconut carved by sailors and/or soldiers who visited the East or West Indies in the late 18th to the early 19th centuries. The bug bears were carved from green coconut shells which were easier to carve than dried ones. There are various examples of these types of items from a host of European countries during their visits. Originally the bug bears would have had a form of stopper on a chain which would protect the contents within, usually gunpowder.
