From our Silver collection we are pleased to offer this Antique Silver Cellini Ewer by Alfred Ivory. The Antique Silver Ewer after the famous designs by Italian renaissance metalsmith Benvenuto Cellini. The ewer cast from sterling silver is beautifully formed with slightly tapered ovoid body, circular foot with a lidded opening and cast scroll handle formed as a woman’s bust. The Silver ewer profusely chased and embossed to the body with classical masks, figureheads, animals and floral sprays between flutes and strap work. A fantastic example hallmarked Sterling Silver, London by silversmith Alfred Ivory and dated 1873.
Alfred IvoryÂ
Alfred Ivory was a 19th-century London silversmith from a family of makers rooted in Clerkenwell. He continued the trade after his mother, Elizabeth Ivory, briefly managed the workshop in 1860–61, marking an enduring presence in the London silver trade.
Sterling SilverÂ
Sterling silver is an alloy containing 92.5% pure silver blended with 7.5% other metals, usually copper, to add strength and durability. This standard, established in England in the 12th century, became the benchmark for fine silverware. Its balance of purity and resilience made it the preferred material for silversmiths like Alfred Ivory, allowing intricate designs while ensuring long-lasting quality.
