Description
An Art Nouveau sterling silver mirror by William Comyns, dating to 1910. The mirror is of shaped form retaining its original bevelled mirror plate within a sterling silver surround engraved with alternating polished bands and finely engraved rose decoration.
The domed crest is centred by a vacant circular cartouche enclosed within a floral wreath. Further engraved roses continue around the frame, while the reverse retains its original easel support finished with a blue velvet backing.
When handled, the original bevelled mirror plate sits neatly within the silver surround and the easel support opens and closes smoothly, allowing the mirror to stand securely for display.
William Comyns was one of London’s leading silversmiths during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, producing decorative silver that is particularly associated with the Art Nouveau period. His work is recognised for its use of flowing floral ornament and carefully engraved naturalistic decoration.
The mirror is fully hallmarked for sterling silver by William Comyns, London, with date marks for 1910.

Who was WILLIAM COMYNS?
Opened his renowned silversmiths business in 1859 and slowly began to develop a substantial business working together with his sons. The core of his success came from producing decorative die stamped tableware and then later the company became noted for their interpretive works of important historical makers such as Paul de Lampiere. After William died in 1916 the firm continued operation until they sold to Bernhard Copping in 1953.
