Amboyna is a highly prized type of burl wood, renowned for its stunning appearance and rarity. Though not a distinct species, the term “Amboyna” refers to the burl wood from various Pterocarpus species, most commonly Narra (Pterocarpus indicus) and sometimes Burma Padauk (Pterocarpus macrocarpus). The name “Amboyna” is derived from Ambon Island in Indonesia, a historical hub for exporting this unique figured wood. Amboyna is especially valued for its intricate grain patterns, vibrant colors, and natural beauty, making it one of the most expensive and sought-after burls in the world. This wood is often sold as veneer or in small blanks for craftwork due to its high cost. The material is popular for creating fine furniture, turned objects, electric guitar tops, knife and gun grips, and other specialty items. There are different variations of Amboyna, with “Red Amboyna” denoting pieces with rich reddish-brown heartwood and “Golden Amboyna” referring to those with lighter, yellowish-brown hues. The wood often displays a striking contrast between the dark heartwood and the lighter sapwood, further enhancing its desirability.
