Description
RARE Model HUMOROUS BEAR CARVING WITH VESTA BOWL
From our Black Forest collection, we are delighted to present this rare Swiss Black Forest Bear Tobacco Jar, dating to circa 1890. Expertly hand carved from linden wood, the bear stands upon a rocky outcrop, walking stick in one paw and a small turned vesta bowl in the other. The bear’s humorous expression, complete with tongue playfully sticking out, captures the lively spirit so often seen in traditional Black Forest carving.
The figure is hinged at the centre, revealing a hollowed interior for storing Tobacco, while the small bowl held in its paw was designed for matches. With its fine naturalistic detail and functional design, this piece combines appealing visuals and utility, making it a highly collectible late 19th century Black Forest carving.
Black Forest Carvings
Swiss Black Forest carvings are highly collectible hand-carved works of art, originating from Brienz, Switzerland in the 19th century. Typically crafted from linden wood or walnut, these pieces feature intricate depictions of animals, daily Alpine life, and whimsical figures. Popular subjects include bears, stags, dogs, eagles, and boars, with rarer animals and larger carvings commanding premium value. Collectors prize quality, realistic detailing, original glass eyes, and occasional carvers’ signatures, all of which significantly enhance desirability.
