Description
This Swiss Black Forest bear tobacco jar is carved in linden wood and modelled as a standing bear holding a walking stick and vesta bowl dating to circa 1890.
The bear stands upon a naturalistic rocky base and is carved with detailed fur and a lively expression, with its tongue playfully protruding. The figure captures the humour often associated with late 19th century Black Forest carving.
The body is hinged at the centre, opening to reveal a hollow interior originally used for storing tobacco, while the small turned bowl held in the paw was designed to hold matches. The combination of practical function and carved detail reflects the inventive nature of Black Forest workshop production during the period.
