Description
VERY RARE SWISS BLACK FOREST SEATED DOG TOBACCO JAR
From our Swiss Black Forest collection, we are delighted to present this very rare Swiss Black Forest Carved Dog Tobacco Jar, dating to circa 1890. The piece is beautifully modelled on an oval rocky base and features a seated dog, finely carved with expressive detail and fitted with original glass eyes.
The body is hollowed and cleverly hinged at the shoulder, opening to reveal its function as a tobacco jar. This unusual design, carved as a seated dog, is exceptionally rare and not a model often encountered on the market.
An outstanding late 19th century Swiss Black Forest carving, combining utility with striking decorative appeal, and a true collector’s piece.
Black Forest Carvings
Swiss Black Forest carvings are highly collectible hand-carved works of art, originating from Brienz, Switzerland in the 19th century. Typically crafted from linden wood or walnut, these pieces feature intricate depictions of animals, daily Alpine life, and whimsical figures. Popular subjects include bears, stags, dogs, eagles, and boars, with rarer animals and larger carvings commanding premium value. Collectors prize quality, realistic detailing, original glass eyes, and occasional carvers’ signatures, all of which significantly enhance desirability.
