Extremely Rare French Champleve Carriage Clock for the Chinese Market
From our Carriage Clock collection we are delighted to offer this extremely rare Chinese Market Carriage Clock by L. Vrard & Co. The Carriage Clock with a gilt brass Gorge case beautifully finished with extensive champleve enamel, enamel white dial with black roman numerals and a top loop handle. The Carriage Clock features the standard minute and hour hand along with a rarer centre sweep seconds hand and an alarm dial numbered one to twelve signed L. Vrard & Co Shanghai. The silvered platform with English-type 8 day crabtooth escapement and cut bi-metallic balance wheel fitted to a half-hourly rack strike movement on a silvered bell at the rear, repeat button on the top at the front of the case and rare separate alarm (alarum) bell situated below. Signed to the right bottom corner Hengdeli (Hang-dah-le) 亨得利 . The Chinese Market Carriage Clock by L. Vrard & Co Shanghai dates to the late 19th century circa 1890 during the Chinese Qing Dynasty.

L. Vrard & Co.
were amongst the most prominent Swiss watchmakers in the late 19th century specialising in watches and clocks for the Chinese Market operating out of two locations in China, Tientsin and later Shanghai under the Chinese name Hengdeli. In 1881 the firm was acquired by Pierre (1840-1899) and Fritz Loup from Motiers. Fritz Loup died in an accident about a year later and the firm was continued by Pierre Loup who died in Tientsin in 1899. Pierre was in turn succeeded by two of his three sons, Gustave (1876-1961) and Bernard Loup (1880-1963). Until 1894, L. Vrard & Cie sold and represented Bovet watches in the north of China. A.
