Description
This Chinese silver basket by Wang Hing is of circular form with detailed repoussé decoration and dates to the late Qing period, circa 1910.
The body is decorated with an outer border of blossoming floral sprays surrounding four shaped cartouches. Each panel depicts a different subject including bamboo, chrysanthemum, iris and a dragon among clouds, worked with fine detail and depth.
The basket is raised on a tapered trumpet form base and fitted with a hinged carry handle, combining decorative surface work with practical form.
The underside is stamped WH for Wang Hing, the Hong Kong silversmith active from 1854 to 1941 and known for producing high quality Chinese export silver for the Western market.

Who is Wang Hing?
Wang Hing (1854-1941) was established in 1854 in Canton by the Lo Family who were wealthy Chinese merchants. The name Wang Hing is actually a chosen trading name rather than a person. The company enjoyed great success providing high quality silver objects mainly for export to the western world. In the early 1940’s during the invasion by the Japanese the company closed after the Lo family fled to the mainland. In today’s market Wang Hing is the most celebrated Chinese Silver company and the most sought after for collectors.

What is the QING DYNASTY?
The Qing dynasty was the final imperial dynasty of China, ruling from 1644 to 1912. It was established by the Manchu people, who originated from northeast Asia and took control of China following the fall of the Ming dynasty.
During the Qing period, China reached significant territorial expansion, incorporating regions such as Tibet, Xinjiang and Mongolia. The early and mid Qing era, particularly under the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong emperors, is often regarded as a time of political stability, economic growth and strong imperial administration.
The dynasty is also known for its development of the decorative arts, including porcelain, metalwork and textiles, many of which were produced for both domestic use and export markets.
By the 19th century, the Qing dynasty faced increasing internal unrest and external pressure from foreign powers. This period saw events such as the Opium Wars and the Taiping Rebellion, which weakened imperial control.
The dynasty formally ended in 1912, marking the end of over two thousand years of imperial rule in China and the beginning of the Republic of China.
