The Dutch Delft Rose Smell Drug Jar dates to the late 18th century circa 1780.
Roose.Reuk
translates directly from dutch to rose smell in English. Roses are thought to bring many healing properties such as speeding up the healing time of a wound to regulate excessive sweating.
Delftware
is a type of tin glazed blue and white pottery that was produced from the 16th century onwards. The tin glazing confers a smooth white opaque finish that gives the pottery its characteristic lustre and feel while the blue comes from cobalt oxide. The ornate cartouches on Delft drug jars describe the substances commonly prescribed from Chemist shops right up to the 19th century. Chemists would have rows often numbering up to 100 on display and in everyday use.
