Large enamel sene depicting three horses
From our Cigarette Cases collection, we are pleased to offer this Enamel Horses Cigarette Case. The Cigarette Case of typical shape with rounded corners and thumb tab for opening has a stunning large enamel scene to the lid depicting three horses in reins upon a pink to blue hue background. The inside of the case is finished in gilding and is stamped with the base metal material “Alpaca” a mixed white metal. The Enamel Horses Cigarette Case dates to the turn of the 20th century during the Art Nouveau period circa 1900.
ALPACCA
is a cupronickel (copper with nickel) alloy with the addition of zinc. The usual formulation is 60% copper, 20% nickel and 20% zinc. It is based off a Chinese formulation of nickel silver (a type of copper alloy containing nickel and zinc) named paktong, translated in English to “white copper.” Nickel silver has a long history, tracing its origins all the way back to the Qing Dynasty in China. During the Qing period, nickel silver was smuggled into the East Indies in direct opposition to a government ban on export of the alloy.
ART NOUVEAU
was an international style of art and architecture, especially the decorative arts. It was inspired by natural forms such as the curves of plants and flowers. Other characteristics of Art Nouveau were a sense of dynamism, movement and the use of modern materials particularly iron, glass and ceramics to create unusual forms. It was popular between 1890 and 1910 during the Belle Époque period and before the First World War. It was a reaction against the academic art, eclecticism and historicism of 19th century architecture and decoration.
ENAMEL (VITREOUS ENAMEL)
also known as porcelain enamel, is a material made by fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 °C. The powder melts, flows, and then hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating. The word vitreous comes from the Latin vitreous, meaning “glassy”.
