    From our Sculpture collection, we are delighted to introduce this miniature French Bronze L’effroi by Théodore Rivière. The French Bronze cased within its original twin door leather box with front clasp opens to reveal a perfectly situated silvered bronze model of L’effroi by Théodore Rivière. L’effroi directly translates to ‘the fear’ and is sculpted as a nude female figure holding her arms in front of her face, finished in silver with a bronze core and stood upon a circular plinth base. The French Bronze is signed to the face of the base T H Rivière for Théodore Louis Auguste Rivière (1857–1912) and dates to the turn of the 20th century circa 1900, Art Nouveau period.


    Théodore Louis Auguste Rivière (1857–1912) was born in was born in Toulouse, Southern France beginning his education at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris (Ecole des Beaux Arts). Rivière studied under François Jouffroy (1806-1882), Antonin Mercié (1845-1916), and Alexandre Falguière (1851-1900). After his studies Rivere went to work in the workshop of another prestigious late 19th Century sculptor, Marius Jean Antonin Mercie. Rivière was very well travelled and drew inspiration from Greek and Roman mythology and biblical narratives as well as his travels in North Africa, the Far East, and during his time living in Carthage, Tunisia. It was in Tunisia where he completed his most famous works, two Orientalist groups based on Gustave Flaubert’s novel Salammbô (published in 1862). He exhibited these sculptures at the 1894 and 1895 Paris Salons with huge success. He worked in bronze, marble, plaster, ceramic, ivory, wood and other mediums creating a large catalogue of objects of which most are housed in the Maryhill Museum of Art. In total, the collection includes almost 40 figures, of which 25 are bronzes and the remainder are works in other mediums.
