Novelty Form of a GondolaÂ
From our Silver collection, we are delighted to introduce this French Silver Boat Snuffbox. The Snuffbox of novelty form in the shape of an Italian gondola boat beautifully engraved throughout the entire exterior with scrollwork and floral sprigs, the  top of the boat with a central scene of Ponte di Rialto in Venice, Italy. The interior of the gondola has been gilded for protection and the lid is accessed on the top of the boat with a hinge around one third of the way up. The French Silver Boat Snuffbox is hallmarked with the French Boars head silver mark and a makers mark for Joseph Chaumet (fl.1890/1928). The Snuff Box dates to the late 19th century during the Art Nouveau period Circa 1890. The Snuffbox comes complete with its original gold tooled case with collectors stickers to the base.
Snuffboxes were used for containing snuff which is a mixture of ground tobacco and scented oils. Originally from the Americas Snuff became extremely popular in 18th century Europe, it was seen as a status symbol and undertaken by the elite in society. Commissioned snuff boxes of various materials would be bought by high status individuals as a sign of wealth and power. Â Snuff boxes became highly prized by collectors from 19th century when snuff was slowly phased out.
Ponte di Rialto The Rialto Bridge is the oldest of the four bridges that cross the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. It links the districts of San Marco and San Polo and has been rebuilt several times since it was first built as a floating bridge in 1173. Today, it’s a popular tourist attraction in the city.
