18th century fruitwood snuff box in the form of a double barrelled flintlock pistol. Realistically modelled with a drop hatch underneath for storing snuff.
Lot Notes: See Edward H. Pinto, ‘Treen and Other Wooden Bygones’ (Bell & Hyman Limited, London, 1979) for a similar but later model. He notes that the design for this snuff box is: ‘based on an early 19th-century joke about a nosologist who is alleged to have invented such a weapon so that he could prime both nostrils simultaneously.’
Condition: Good, Snuff hatch does not lock back & graze to the gun butt.
Measurements: 5cm High x 15.5cm Long x 6cm Wide
