18th century fruitwood snuff box in the form of a double barrelled flintlock pistol. Realistically modelled with a drop hatch underneath for storing snuff. Excellent patina throughout with a wonderful colour to the wood visually displays the many years of use and the history behind it.
Lot Notes: See Edward H. Pinto, ‘Treen and Other Wooden Bygones’ (Bell & Hyman Limited, London, 1979) for a similar but later model. He notes that the design for this snuff box is: ‘based on an early 19th-century joke about a nosologist who is alleged to have invented such a weapon so that he could prime both nostrils simultaneously.’
Condition: Very good, wear due to age and use. Snuff hatch does not lock back.
Measurements: 5cm H x 15.5cm L x 6cm W
