Description
This pair of Japanese bronze and mixed metal vases is decorated with inlaid birds and foliage and dates to the Meiji Period (1868-1912), circa 1880.
Each vase is of bottle form with a flared neck and globular body, raised on a tripod plinth base and fitted with elephant mask handles. The surfaces are extensively inlaid in silver, gold and copper with scrolling motifs and detailed accents.
The main decoration features large naturalistic scenes of birds among flowering branches and foliage emerging from rocky ground, rendered with careful contrast between the mixed metals and dark patinated bronze. The necks are finished with a geometric silver inlaid band, providing structure to the upper section.
The combination of sculptural form and mixed metal inlay reflects the quality of Japanese bronze work produced during the Meiji period for the export market.
