Description
This okimono pair of Japanese bronze doves date to the Meiji period, circa 1880, and are modelled standing in opposing poses upon unusual naturalistic cast bronze bases. Each bird displays crisp feather detail across the wings and body, with finely chased surface decoration bringing depth and texture to the plumage. Their heads are turned slightly towards one another, creating a balanced composition when displayed as a pair.
Both doves are cast with realistic features, from the gentle shaping of the beak and feet to the carefully defined feathers around the neck and tail. Their gilt toned eyes provide a subtle contrast against the dark patinated bronze, bringing further life to the models. The sculptural quality continues into the bases, which are cast to imitate uneven natural ground rather than the more commonly found carved wooden stands.
Although similar in design, each dove has been individually modelled with slight variations in posture and stance. One bird stands with its neck extended and head raised, while its companion adopts a more relaxed pose, giving the pair a natural sense of movement without appearing identical.
The bronze has developed a rich, even patina which complements the finely chased detail throughout. Dating to the Meiji period, these bronze okimono reflect the naturalistic animal studies that became increasingly popular during the late nineteenth century, with careful attention given to anatomy, proportion and surface detail. Their opposing poses and original cast bronze bases make them an attractive display as a pair.

What is an Okimono?
Okimono (置物) translates literally to “object for display” or “standing ornament”, combining oku (to place) and mono(thing). Unlike functional netsuke, okimono were created purely as freestanding decorative sculptures. Traditionally showcased in the tokonoma (the formal alcove of a Japanese room), they reached their artistic zenith during the Meiji period (1868-1912), when master carvers and metal smiths redirected their talents toward luxury items for domestic display and export. Crafted in materials ranging from boxwood, ivory, and bronze to mixed metal alloys like shakudō, their subjects span mythical figure work, naturalistic fauna, and snapshots of daily life.

The Oriental turtle dove (kiji-bato, meaning “pheasant pigeon”) is a classic Japanese symbol of marital fidelity, harmony, and peace.
