Description
A Japanese Satsuma earthenware vase of hexagonal form dating to the Meiji period circa 1910. The vase is beautifully executed by the Kyoto workshop of Kozan, finely decorated against a rich cobalt blue ground with detailed figural and landscape scenes framed by extensive gilt borders.
One principal panel depicts a group of bijin (beautiful women) within a flourishing garden setting beneath trailing wisteria, surrounded by autumn chrysanthemums, cosmos and morning glory. The figures are dressed in richly patterned kimono heightened with fine gilt and soft polychrome enamels, the delicate palette contrasting beautifully against the deep cobalt ground. When handled, the fine micro-craquelure characteristic of Satsuma glaze is cleanly evident across the cream earthenware reserves.
The opposing panel presents a tranquil riverside landscape with traditional buildings set beside a flowing stream and water wheel, with birds in flight above and distant hills fading into the background. Executed in softer, atmospheric tones, the landscape provides a pleasing contrast to the more animated figural scene and demonstrates the painter’s ability to balance narrative subjects with natural scenery.
Separating the two principal reserves are narrow cobalt blue panels densely decorated in gilt with cascading wisteria, while the lower body is finished with an unusual netted pattern interspersed with butterflies rendered in gilt. The vase stands upon a Greek key border and is further enriched with geometric ornament to the neck, details that provide structural balance to the overall design.
The underside bears a crisp red cartouche with gilt characters reading 日本 光山 (Japan, Kozan). Fresh to the market, this Japanese Satsuma vase combines finely painted figural decoration, atmospheric landscape scenes and richly gilded ornament, making it an appealing addition to a collection of Japanese ceramics or a carefully considered interior.

WHAT IS SATSUMA WARE?
Satsuma ware originated in southern Kyushu around 1600 and developed into one of Japan’s most recognisable ceramics. Early Ko-Satsuma pieces were rustic, dark-clay wares made for everyday use, while the later Kyo-Satsuma style became famous worldwide during the Meiji period.
Characterised by ivory crackled glaze, delicate overglaze enamels, and lavish gilding, export Satsuma appealed strongly to Western collectors. Designs often feature landscapes, flowers, figures, and scenes from Japanese life and mythology. Renowned artists such as Yabu Meizan, Ryozan, and the Kinkozan workshop produced some of the finest examples, which remain highly sought after today. Genuine Satsuma can often be identified by the Shimazu crest, artist signatures, or the mark “Dai Nippon” used during the Meiji era.
