From our Decorative collection, we are pleased to offer this charming and unusual carved tobacco jar modelled as a kingfisher.
The jar is beautifully shaped with a stylised form, capturing the bird’s signature long beak, plump body and upright posture. Rich green and blue tones wash across the surface, enhanced by inset glass eyes that bring the piece to life. The head lifts on a concealed hinge at the neck to reveal the hollow interior, originally used for storing loose tobacco.
Dating to circa 1930, the jar was produced during the Art Deco period and reflects a playful and sculptural approach to functional design. We have not come across this exact model before, and it makes a wonderful collector’s piece with great display presence. Today, these jars are often repurposed for holding small items on desks or shelves including sweets, office items or even keys.
WHAT IS A TOBACCO JAR?
Tobacco jars were designed to keep tobacco fresh while also serving as decorative pieces in the home. Often made from wood, ceramic or metal, they came in a wide range of forms from simple containers to more elaborate figural designs. Used from the 17th century onwards, they became both practical and ornamental objects reflecting the habits and style of their time.

WHAT IS A Kingfisher
The kingfisher is a small to medium-sized bird known for its vivid plumage, large head and distinctive long, pointed bill. Found across much of the world, most species live in the tropical regions of Asia, Africa and Oceania, although some can also be spotted in Europe and the Americas. While often associated with rivers and streams, not all kingfishers live near water, and their diet varies from fish to small invertebrates. They nest in burrows dug into riverbanks or even termite mounds, and their striking colours and elegant form have long made them a favourite subject in decorative art and design.
