Pair of Art Deco maritime anchor candlesticks executed in silver plated brass, dating to circa 1935. The candlesticks are constructed with anchor columns wrapped in heavy gauge twisted rope work, giving the pair a notably stable and architectural feel when handled.
Each candlestick is formed with an open candle socket above a shaped neck, intersected by horizontal anchor bars and further anchor motifs rising from the domed bases. The tightly coiled rope borders and layered maritime detailing reflect the strong nautical influence seen within late Art Deco decorative arts, particularly designs associated with ocean liner interiors and the emerging Style Paquebot movement.
The contrast between the polished silver plated surfaces and warmer brass tones enhances the sculptural quality of the design, while the balanced proportions allow the candlesticks to retain a strong visual presence without becoming overly decorative.
Maritime objects of this type became increasingly fashionable during the early twentieth century, particularly within coastal estates, private gentlemen’s clubs and luxury ocean liner smoke rooms where nautical themes were incorporated into modern interiors.

What was the Paquebot Movement?
Style Paquebot, also known as the ocean liner style, was a branch of late Art Deco design that emerged during the 1930s. The movement took inspiration from the streamlined forms of luxury transatlantic ocean liners such as the SS Normandie, incorporating curved lines, polished surfaces, horizontal banding and nautical motifs into architecture, interiors and decorative arts. The style reflected the period’s fascination with speed, modernity and travel, becoming closely associated with luxury hotels, ocean liners, coastal residences and fashionable metropolitan interiors.
WHAT IS SILVER PLATE?
Silver plate, more accurately known as electroplated silver, is a process in which a thin layer of silver is bonded onto a base metal, most commonly copper, nickel silver, or brass, using an electrical current. Developed during the early 19th century, electroplating allowed manufacturers to produce objects with the appearance and durability of solid silver at a more accessible cost.
By the Victorian period, silver plated wares became widely used for both domestic and decorative purposes, particularly in tableware, candlesticks, and ornamental objects.
