Unusual pair of French porcelain wall sconce modelled as cats. The pair both of similar decoration with a white coloured glaze across the main body of the cats. A floral decoration with multiple colours fills the arms and legs of the cats with a coat of arms to the centre of each. To the underside an unglazed base signed “St Malo”. Similar facial features can be seen on Emile Galle ceramic cat designs.
Lot Nots: The coat of arms seen on this piece represents Saint-Malo, a port city in Brittany, Northwest France. The cities tall granite walls surround the old town, which was once a stronghold for privateers (pirates approved by the king). The Saint-Malo Cathedral, in the center of the old town, is built in Romanesque and Gothic styles and features stained-glass windows depicting city history. Nearby is La Demeure de Corsaire, an 18th-century privateer’s house and museum. The city is widely know for its wealth earned by overseas adventures and local extortion.
Condition: Good, minor fretting to the paws and rubbing from age related wear.
