Description
This Austrian silver and enamel dog cigarette case dates to the late Art Nouveau period, circa 1910. Of slim rectangular form with rounded corners, the exterior is decorated with a finely enamelled Great Dane standing in profile, wearing a brown collar against a polished silver ground.
The case has a clean, understated outline that allows the enamel decoration to take centre stage. The Great Dane is carefully observed, with crisp detailing to the coat, musculature and head, creating a striking contrast against the plain silver surface.
Opening via the side thumb piece, the hinged case reveals a gilt interior retaining its original sprung retaining arm for securing cigarettes. The inside is stamped 800, indicating 800-grade silver, alongside a partially rubbed maker’s mark.
