Description
This sterling silver vinaigrette by Joseph Ash I is of circular form with engraved decoration and dates to London 1808 during the reign of George III.
The body is of petit circular form with a removable lid opening to reveal a pierced internal grille, designed to hold a scented sponge. The exterior is engraved with rare erotic phallic motifs, a form of decoration occasionally found on novelty silver of the period.
The underside is fully hallmarked for London with the maker’s mark of Joseph Ash I, a known Birmingham and London silversmith working in the early 19th century.

WHAT are Vinaigrettes?
Vinaigrettes are small portable boxes used during the 18th and 19th centuries for carrying perfume or aromatic vinegar. Designed for travel, they offered a practical alternative to bottles, with a pierced internal grille holding a scented sponge.
Most examples were made in silver or gold and vary widely in form and decoration, reflecting both the maker and the period. They were carried as personal items and often reflect the quality and taste of their owner.
Vinaigrettes remain a well-established area of collecting, with examples by known makers and unusual subjects commanding particular interest. Erotic examples such as this are particularly rare.
Who is JOSEPH ASH I?
was a London silversmith apprenticed to Roger Biggs of the Glovers Company from 1793. He became free in 1801 and his 1st mark as small worker 1801 entered one day after his freedom. He had two sons, James and Joseph II, James apprenticed to Joseph Bibbs in 1818.
