    Description

This Swiss Black Forest Gnome Carving attributed to Johann Linder dates to the late nineteenth century, circa 1890. Carved from linden wood, the figure is modelled standing with a walking staff in his right hand and his left hand raised to his brow as he peers into the distance.

The carving is worked with particularly fine detail throughout, from the deeply cut folds of the clothing and boots to the individual strands of the beard and moustache. The face is especially expressive, with carefully carved eyes, brows and visible teeth adding character to the figure.

The reverse is equally well finished, with the pointed hat, gathered clothing and knapsack all fully carved. The figure is attributed to Johann Linder of Brienz, a name associated with high quality Swiss Black Forest figure carving of the period and known for his whimsical gnome figures.

    WHAT ARE BLACK FOREST CARVINGS?

Swiss Black Forest carvings are highly collectible hand-carved works of art, originating from Brienz, Switzerland in the 19th century. Typically crafted from linden wood or walnut, these pieces feature intricate depictions of animals, daily Alpine life, and whimsical figures. Popular subjects include bears, stags, dogs, eagles, and boars, with rarer animals and larger carvings commanding premium value. Collectors prize quality, realistic detailing, original glass eyes, and occasional carvers’ signatures, all of which significantly enhance desirability.
