The Tiffany Stirrup Cup is cast in Solid Silver with the Stags head upon a fluted base which allows the user to stand the cup either on the antlers while drinking or on the fluted base. The Stirrup Cup is hallmarked to the rim of the opening Tiffany & Co. Sterling, 925, Germany and bears the hallmark for renowned German silversmiths J. D. Schleissner & Söhne. J. D. Schleissner & Söhne were regarded as the main producer of Hanau Silver which became popular during the 19th century for their excellent copies of historical antique silver. Johann Daniel Christian Schleissner (1793-1862) was the son of a goldsmith from Augsburg, Bavaria one of Germans oldest cities. J.D moved to Hanau in the early 19th century and shortly following his arrival in 1817 he opened his own Silver company. J.D produced a range of products in the Ausburg style and with an international audience began to grow a substantial business. The success of J.D Schleissner brought in many other Silver companies to the area which only grew the popularity of the company. J.D son Daniel Philipp August Schleissner (1825-1891) took over the business after the passing of his father and took the company in a new direction specialising in decorative objects in the traditional antique style, he lived in the USA up until 1861 working for a silverware factory in Attleboro, Massachusetts. Daniel was very well travelled and studied silverware across many collection’s and with his wealth of knowledge he began to produce silver with Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo influence. Daniel hallmarked the silver with the traditional hallmarks that were used on the antique pieces much like the other silversmiths in Hanau. This carries some confusion when approaching originals compared to later reproduced pieces such as those undertaken by the Schleissner & Söhne factory. Although Schleissner were not the inventor of “pseudo marks”, their were certainly responsible for their wide use and the irritations these marks cause. The company grew substantially under Daniel gaining approximately 977 employees between the years of 1825 to 1848 and only 31 years after the company opened they were employing over 1000 employees from the local area which increased to almost 3000 by 1907.

Stirrup Cup is regarded as a “parting cup” given to guests, especially when they are leaving and have their ‘feet in the stirrups’. It is also the traditional drink which usually is port or sherry served at the meet prior to a traditional fox hunt. The term can describe the cup that such a drink is served in. Often the Stirrup Cup will be shaped with a head of wildlife linking it to its purpose.
