    Description

Whimsical Black Forest desk accessory with hand-carved rabbit, tree pen rest, and hat-lidded glass inkwells.

From our Black Forest collection, we are delighted to present this unusual and charming carved walnut inkwell and pen tray dating to the turn of the 20th century, circa 1900.

The humorous design features a finely hand-carved standing rabbit, depicted upright in a blazer with its arms folded, leaning against a tree trunk. The tree branches stretch outward to form a natural pen rest. Flanking the figure are two removable glass inkwells, each surmounted by hand-carved wooden hunting hats with feather detail, serving as lids.

The base is shaped as a rocky outcrop with detailed carving that highlights the rustic character associated with traditional Black Forest work. This piece would have served as both a functional desk accessory and a decorative conversation piece, embodying the wit and originality found in late 19th to early 20th-century Black Forest carvings.

A superb example for collectors of Black Forest objects, writing accessories, or whimsical animal carvings.

    BLACK FOREST CARVINGS

Swiss Black Forest carvings are highly collectible hand-carved works of art, originating from Brienz, Switzerland in the 19th century. Typically crafted from linden wood or walnut, these pieces feature intricate depictions of animals, daily Alpine life, and whimsical figures. Popular subjects include bears, stags, dogs, eagles, and boars, with rarer animals and larger carvings commanding premium value. Collectors prize quality, realistic detailing, original glass eyes, and occasional carvers’ signatures, all of which significantly enhance desirability.
