William Hutton and Sons SilverÂ
From our Silver collection, we are delighted to present this fine pair of Sterling Silver Fox Boot Pulls by the renowned maker William Hutton & Sons.
The pulls feature beautifully modelled foxes in sterling silver, mounted on strong steel shafts for durability. Each fox is hallmarked for Sheffield, 1898, firmly placing the set in the Art Nouveau period.
The pair is housed in its original Moroccan red leather case, shaped with a push-button clasp and lined in silk and velvet, a rare surviving box. The finely detailed foxes, combined with the exceptional quality of Hutton & Sons’ silver work, make this a highly collectible example of late 19th-century functional silver.
William Hutton and Sons
was a prominent English silversmithing firm founded in Sheffield in 1800 by William Hutton. Known for producing both sterling silver and high quality silver plate, the company gained a strong reputation throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. As the business expanded, it opened a London showroom and absorbed other makers, allowing it to offer a wide range of domestic and decorative wares. Their hallmarks—most often including W.H.&S or W.H.&S Ltd—are well-recognised by collectors today. The firm continued until 1930, when it was absorbed by James Dixon & Sons, leaving behind a legacy of practical and attractive silver still appreciated by buyers today.
Sterling Silver
is an alloy composed by weight of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. The sterling silver standard has a minimum millesimal fineness (parts per thousand) of 925.
