    French First Empire (1804-1815)

The French First Empire was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1804 and marked one of the most powerful periods in European history. At its height, the empire extended across much of continental Europe, spreading Napoleonic reforms such as legal equality, the jury system, and the abolition of aristocratic privileges. The period is closely associated with the grandeur of Empire style decorative arts, characterised by classical motifs, rich gilding, and bold designs. Although the empire ended with Napoleon’s defeat in 1815, it left a lasting legacy on law, governance, and the decorative arts of the early 19th century.

    Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821)

Napoleon Bonaparte, later Napoleon I, rose to power during the French Revolution and became Emperor of the French in 1804. He expanded France’s influence through decisive military campaigns, reshaping Europe during the Napoleonic Wars. Beyond the battlefield, his legacy includes the Napoleonic Code, which reformed law and administration across Europe. The First Empire (1804–1815) produced some of the finest works of French decorative art, often marked by classical motifs, rich gilding, and bold design. Napoleon remains one of history’s most influential leaders, and objects from his reign embody the ambition and grandeur of the period.

    BRONZE

Bronze has been one of the most widely used materials in art and design for centuries, valued for its strength, durability, and ability to capture fine detail. Popular from ancient civilisations to the 19th century, bronze has been used for statues, decorative objects, and functional pieces alike. In the late 19th century, artists in Vienna, including Franz Xaver Bergmann, perfected the technique of cold-painting, adding rich layers of colour to bronze without firing. This innovation, along with the timeless appeal of bronze’s patina and texture, ensures that antique bronze objects remain highly collectible today.
